'Silver Speaks: Idea to Object' at the V&A

Brushstroke dish on black w news

'Brushstroke' dish, selected for the Contemporary British Silversmiths exhibition 'Silver Speaks: Idea to Object', curated by Corinne Julius. The exhibition opened in March 2016, and runs until 2nd July 2017. In the Whiteley Silver Galleries at 'Museum of the Year', the wonderful V&A. It's a fascinating exhibition which traces how a work in silver is brought into being from the inspiration, through sketches, models, through material experimentation and construction processes, to the final piece.

Silver Speaks is a year long programme of events to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Contemporary British Silversmiths (which I am currently Chair of).

Loving Cup for the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers

Loving Cup black shadows w

Loving cup first used at a dinner for the Lord Mayor of London in April 2016, alongside silver owned by Samuel Pepys, who was elected Master of the Company in 1677. The design is based on a Teazel flower, an emblem of the Clothworkers, as they were traditionally used to raise the knap on cloth.

Alongside Angela Cork's beautiful dish based on sails billowing in the breeze, and Rod Kelly's stunning Jubilee dish, my 'Mountain Burn' piece, commemorating Lord Sutherland's time as Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths' Company, is on show at The Silversmith's Art exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland until January. All 3 pieces will be part of the new contemporary 'Buffet Plate', displayed at Goldsmiths' Hall for certain events. Angela and I are proud to be the first women silversmiths represented as part of the Buffet Plate. The antique version has a centrepiece by Paul De Lamerie (the greatest Silversmith in Britain in the 18thC, according to the V&A) so keep an eye on the Antiques Roadshow in about 200 year's time (it will still be on telly)!
